Compost Heaps - water or not

Should I water my compost heaps ?
They are in plastic containers and dry out (lids in place) - so believe that they need watering to rot down........
Is this correct ?

well, we water ours every now & then especially when they're dry, then keep turning them over so it helps distribute everything , hope this helps :-)

If its dry, than its best to water it, I have mine in the council bins, four, and one empty, and use a rotation, get excellent compost this way, and it keeps me fit.

You must water your compost heaps and keep them moist.
The worms, bugs etc that are working away to help the composting process need water to survive.

Don't let the heaps get too wet or you'll end up with a soggy mess and slow the process down. Protect your heap from rain if you can.

BTW, urine is a great additive to compost. I have 3 compost bins and add 4 litres of urine to each on a weekly basis. It works as an accelerator.

[joke mode] It's best to collect it in a container first and not run the risk of getting caught depositing it directly into the compost bin. [/joke mode]
