Best to cut back the damaged ceiling till you reach the joists. A 400mm Square should surfice. Put in a couple of Timbers (noggins) perpendicular to the joists at the open ends, To support the edges. Then you can cut a new bit of plasterboard to fit and secure it properly to the joists and noggins. fit some plaster scrim self adhesive tape to the joints and finaly patch it up with a plaster scim coat. Job Done.
