Chimney Support
2 Answers
I am in the process of moving and have just have had my survey come back unfortunately with a problem. I have been advised that the chimney has not been supported correctly in the roof space and should be investigated. Obviously I will get this checked by a builder but in the meantime does anyone know if this is likely to be a big job and the approximate possible cost?

A builders report is not suitable, most of them are half-baked and waffle rubbish. As to rough costs how can anyone tell unless you give sizes, a full description, some photographs and a copy of the surveyors report?
We had this problem with a house we were looking to buy.It was a lovely old Victorian villa ..
We had a full independent survey done by a Chartered Surveyor and to our horror found that where the owner had knocked out the chimney breast it was supported on a scaffold board ! We were quoted just short of three thousand pounds to have it all done properly. I had visions of the whole thing collapsing as we sat there, didn't want the mess or worry so we didn't buy the house !! Money down the drain in a way but worth it if you are buying an older property .
