When purchasing you should check what capacity they both offer. I thought I was getting a good deal when I purchased my washer dryer, but the drying capacity is very low. If you had space I would definately go for separates if you could.
They are terrible. I would not recommend one. I had to get one for my rented house because a) there was not space for two and b) the landlord was unwilling to allow me to knock a hole in his wall to put the tumble dryer pipe out.
Even with a huge spin speed like 1600, I would then take the clothes out and put just a couple in at a time to dry and they would take ages and still come out damp, an annoying damp which often ment I still had to hang them on a drying rack.
The first washer drier I used sometime ago was fitted when I moved in and the whole time I lived there and tried to use the drier function it performed so bad I complained to the landlord when I left that is was broken. But when I moved house and had to get my own I had the same problem.
I would put just 2 bath towels in the drier for 40-50 mins and they would still be damp so I would have to restart the drier again and come back later. It meant that it took a whole day 9am-11pm to wash and dry just one load of washing. And because they never dried completely the clothes would all smell funny esp, the Bath towels when you went to use one and re wet it. It smelt so bad you couldn't use it.
I have moved house again and have fitted washing machine and separate tumble drier and it is amazing quickly washed and dried, huge capacity in drier and fast. In no more smelly clothes.
Please please do not get one unless you have too, if you do get the fastest spin you can get to get the most water out the clothes brfore you try to dry them and buy a washing line for outside and a clothes drier for inside.

they do take a long time also, you obviously can't wash and dry simultaneously. Sounds a bit obvious I know, but you wouldn't know how frequently you would want to do this until you can't.
I have separates now and would never go back to a washer/dryer. The dryer part isn't really worth it's name. If you have space go for separates and a stacking rack to save floor space.
