Can anyone give me some idea how much it might cost to build a standard-size utitility room on to my kitchen? I would be making a large window into a sliding door to access the utility room? Also, can it be built over an existing sewer pipe?

Good builders need to see your drawings before they price the job, so get an architect to make them up, get them passed by your council if necessary or get your building regulations (phone the council and ask them what you need, with measurements) then get three local builders (recommended if possible) and go for the middle price or the one you have a good feeling about. Look around your area where work is being carried out, when the builders have gone home knock on the door of the home owner and see if they are pleased with the work, take it from there. Good luck ! Don't do anything without permission from the local council.
I would echo everything smurfchops has said and add that yes, there are ways to build over drainage pipes.
As a very very rough idea, use 1000 per square metre of floor space created. But the above ABers are correct in their advice to you. My estimate could vary by +/-30%. A flat roof will cost less than a pitched one (but looks naff). Yes you can build over sewer pipes if its your sewer and probably even if its a shared pipe.

That gives us some idea of the kind of money we are talking. Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.
