Depends on the type and age of the original fitting as to how well the marry up with the new clobber...but you seem to know what your doing so even if it's old pipes you could buy a pipe size converter.....The only word of caution is to watch the water pressure on the this that it isn't too high for these joints.
Good warning sft. I used to live in a small, modern development on top of a 300ft hill. The water was pumped to us at a very high pressure and two of the houses were completely flooded when the push-fit joints came apart.
The push fit stuff use pipe the same o.d. as the copper pipe that it replaces, therefore your elbows and tees will have to be plastic push fit ones. The most important aspect of the whole business of leak tight assembly is to ensure your pipe (copper or plastic) is as free of burrs and smoothed off impecably otherwise you will damage the internal seal of the plastic couplings. Other wise its a piece of cake. You will find cutting plastic pipe with conventional pipe cutters a right farce though.
