Is there any way I can stretch a favourite woollen sweater which has shrunk badly despite gentle handwashing in barely warm water?

Atkins diet might work

Ouch !

But yes, taking a few pounds off might help, but alas dieting won't make my arms any shorter and the end of sweater sleeves are now creeping up towards my elbow.
The only thing I can suggest Wendy is to dunk it in some warm water ..squeeze gently between some towels and then block it out ...much like we used to block hand knitted garments. Pull it into shape ..lay it on a padded surface( old sheet or something folded and covered in a towel ) pin it down with dressmaking pins and let it dry.

Thanks Shaneystar. I'll give this a try. It might help if we had some nice outdoor drying weather where I could lay it flat on something in the garden but that's not a possibility with the current driving rain. It will have to be some kind of mechanism over the bath I guess.
