Wiring trick of the trade. What is it???

I'm fitting two wall cupboards in a bathroom and want to drill into the wall, put a cable behind the plasterboard and get the power source for lighting in a socket I have in the attic. Whats the trick in getting the cable from the bathroom behind the plasterboard and up into the attic between the two layers of plaster board. How can I measure or find the exact place in the attic to drop the cable and hope to find the hole I wouild drill in the bathroom wall. Is there an easy way?

Hi Ken,

Directly above, where you want the cable to come from, i.e. where the wall joins the ceiling, poke a thin screwdriver through. You will see this from the attic, measure in from this point and that will give you the distance from the outside of the wall to the wall centre.

You can now poke a wire coathanger with a hook down between the plaster board wall i.e. if you are lucky and meet no obstructions.

I do it by drilling a SMALL hole (3mm) in the bathroom celing from below to give me a reference point to know exactly where I must drill above. Usually there's wooden studwork above the where the double plasterboard - I drill a large hole or two of about 15mm to push a bent coathanger down into the area where the hole behind the cupboard is located. Then hook up a piece of string - to which attach the cable to pull up. Fill 3mm hole with Polyfilla.

Hi ken there are very strict rules regarding the use of electricity in bathrooms I would wait for a post from Raysparks before you do any 2nd fix hth Tez

The regulations regarding wiring differ with distance and height from the water in the bathroom (bath,taps,etc). If the cupboards are on a wall, and i'm guessing relatively high then you should be ok.
