we had a prepayment meter fitted 14 yrs ago. they removed the original meter which was in a box out the front of house and fitted a prepayment meter inside my back. last week i got the prepayment meter replaced with a credit meter but for the guy to return it to the box out front they tell me it COULD cost 300-800. they said a guy will need to come and access the work need to be done before they could say for sure. it looks to me that they just need disconnect meter inside and reconnect out side !! any advise would be great.

You are not obliged to use British Gas to do this work - there are a number of qualified infrastructure providers you could approach to ask for quotes. See here for some FAQ on this and finding out who operates in your area.
I think you are unlikely to be able to get this work done for a few pounds - irrespective of the apparent simplicity. The job will have to be assessed by a technician visit and a quote prepared. Whilst there are safeguards for domestic customers to ensure they can get prepayment or credit meters installed relatively cheaply (or even for free), what you are asking for appears to be non-essential?

The title of your question made me laugh. An idiot went through a gas pipe 12 miles away but we have been without gas since yesterday afternoon. At the last count we had 15 transco engineers in our town.
