rabbit died suddenly blood in urine

My rabbit was put to sleep late wednesday and I just feel terrible not only was I extremely close to the rabbit since the death of my brother last year, it was my best friend and was a very healthy 1 and a half year old. Who had never had a single health problem before.

She was full of life monday running around the indoor run (she lived indoors all year round) and then became quiet tuesday I noticed and reddy/brown bottom on her as she was white and through it might be blood she was still eating and drinking though just alittle less than usual so I thought I would monitor her for a little time.

The following day wednesday morning I stayed home from work because she was still reb/brown bottomed but now not eating or moving round so we took her to the vet that afternoon.

The vet felt her and said she was sensative in the bladder region the vet then manually empted her bladder which was all blood and the rabbit was in complete agony and as a result of squeezing the bladder made her lose so much blood her condition grew extremely bad in seconds. My rabbit was flat out unable to breath and she went from pink to blue which lack of blood. The vet came back after looking at the sample of blood and said she thought it was cystitous (if thats how you spell it) and it was the worse case she had seen in a rabbit so young.

The condition of my rabbit got so bad in the vets we had to put her to sleep so she did not suffer any more.

I am worried that I have done something wrong, food /nutrition etc or that I could have helped her if there had been more warning. I would like to know it anyone else has witnessed such syptoms in rabbits etc. or if anyone knows about cystitious in rabbits.

Sorry to hear this, I don't know anything about cystitis in rabbits, but I am sure your vet would have done the right thing. Perhaps you could phone and ask to speak to the vet, to put your mind at rest? I am sure he will be more than happy to explain things, as it is always difficult to ask questions at the time and to remember what was being said.

So sorry to hear about your pet, it all must have been a horrible shock to lose the rabbit so suddenly like that., especially after losing your Brother last year. I'm sure it would ease your mind to follow lankeela's suggestion and phone the Vet.
You did everything you could for the rabbit including staying home from work to look after it, so don't torture yourself over it, just remember the happy times and the affection you had for the Bunny.

Aaaah, bless her, the pictures show her to be a very sweet bunny. "Do da bunny " - was that her name ?

lol yes her name was 'do da'

We could not think of a name for her when we got her and well people (especially in the north) say the term/word 'do da' when they cannot think of the correct name for something. It s like saying to someone " you know .....erm thingy bob...erm do da!"

lol you probably haven't got a clue what I 'm on about It maybe a northern term I grew up in the north but now live in the south west so people do tend to look confused when I say things every so often. lol

i was just googling and found this website because ive cared for my girlfreinds rabbit for seven years and recently ive been finding red stained bedding but she semed fine until today i got home from work and found her dead in her cage near her food tray very traumatic for me,i just lost my older brother to cancer and now this i dont know how this happened she must of had cancer or somerthing.

ken and kim - I am so sorry to hear your sad news, especislly as it seems so much like what happened to me the other year. I think the symptoms of the reddish bottom is a bladder infection, and that is what your rabbit most likely died of, and reddish colour is blood in their urine. I am so sorry for your loss, but if it comforts you at all in the previous days, weeks and months before the day my rabbit died, she was extremely happy and content, and must not have felt ill or in pain until that last day and even then she didnt seem distressed just sleepy and distant, it was only going to the vet and having the vet examine her that was painful and your rabbit stayed home where it felt safe your rabbit didnt go through that. So you can feel comforted that your rabbit didnt suffer she was happy and running around until she just fell off to sleep,to wake in rabbit heaven with my beauty, running free in the wide expanse where carrots grow wild.

hi,i just lost my black lopear last nt, earlier he had been running all round house next time i looked on him he was laid out near his food bowls dead,, im gutted he was a best friend, sit on lap chase around the house.. oh im sad..

hi,just googled the problem you had as my best friend my rabbit died last night suddenly,earlier in the evening he was bobing around the house etc, followed me into the kitchen so i gave him some lettuce, when i went in later he was laid out dead, i'm a builder and it reduced me to tears seeing him dead,on seeing this forum it helped my girlfriend and i find solace..i noticed blood in his outdoor toilet in his hutch,sadly i didn't notice it in the litter tray he used when inside the house.. bigwig was his name a large black lop ear..missed loads.x
