at the back of our open fire the mortor is breaking up ,i am not able to replace it with a fire brick. can i get a plaster type product to repair the existing mortor with?

You need fire cement, B&Q sell it as a paste in a tube
you can get tubs of it too - unfortunately it's not great and teh whole area needs to be spotless before application, and that's not easy with a fireplace
another way of protecting the mortar once repaired is to buy a fireback which is often an ornate black metal plate which not only protects the wall, but also radiates and stores the heat
