Greenhouse advice

Hello

I am new to gardening and currently have my name down for an allotment as I wanted to start growing my own fruit and veg but currently there is a seriously long waiting list for an allotment.

unfortunately, we dont have any room in my garden to have a vegetable plot but its my birthday soon and I am getting one of those little greenhouses that go on side of your house. Its a biggish walk in one but not as big as a real greenhouse.

Is it possible that I can grow any fruit and vegetables in this or is it mainly for flowers? likr i say I am very new to gardening but am willing to do the hard work needed I just dont actually know what I can realistically grow .

Tomatoes, peppers cucumbers anything delicate that needs a bit of protection and extra warmth You can grow plants for your hanging baskets tubs etc Tesco and other plant places sell plug plants that you can pot on until they are big enough to plant out and the weather is warmer

last year I grew Radishes and Salad leaf in seed trays, Baby Carrots in a large pot, also some Leeks in a plastic window box. anyway, for when you get your Allotment, here's a site that should come in handy, stick it in your Favourites for future use.

If you're strapped for space, you could also try growing gooseberry & blackcurrant bushes in large containers somewhere in your garden, then when you eventually get your allotment you can transfer them there. Do you have a front garden? if so, you can always do what I've done and instead of planting shrubs or flowers, I've planted soft fruit bushes in the borders. Not a very traditional use of space I know, but as front gardens as otherwise often wasted, it has resolved my problem of not having enough space for them in my back garden.
Aubergines will also grow in your mini greenhouse. They like a slightly warmer climate than UK outdoors. Chillis will also do fine in there.
Swiss Chard (rather like spinach) now also comes in a variety called Bright Lights, and has very decorative yellow and red stems & leaves so a few plants can be dotted in your flowers borders. You will find the seeds in a good garden centre but you can certainly start them off in trays in your mini greenhouse.

I used to grow dwarf french beans in a tub and got good crops. Also grow courgettes in a grow bag they are easy peasy to grow. Grow some outdoor tomatoes from seed. You can get one variety that you can grow in hanging baskets. Go and read all the seed packets, you'll be amazed at what you can grow in a small space. Good luck.
