My carpet has been trashed by a lodger who let her dog use the bedroom as a toilet. I've tried Carpet Power and Vanish and is hasn't really done much. I need to call in the expert carpet cleaner but which type? Wet? Dry? Steam? Anyone got any experience of removing dog stains sucessfully? It's a high quality hessian backed wool mix thing. Creamy Beige. Well, now it's creamy beige with about 40 yellow patches.

why not just buy a new carpet ?

Could do, except it's a huge room (it was the lounge), the carpet has only been down a few years, it wasn't cheap and the whole house is carpetted in the same carpet throughout. And I'm a bit strapped which is why I had a lodger in the first place. But I'll bear your suggestion in mind!
I would bill the lodger for a new carpet - you'll never get rid of the disgusting dog-poo smell.
Phone a local carpet cleaning firm that are accredited with the National Carpet Cleaners Association (check on yell.com) & get their advice. I have 4 dogs & have had the occasional accident and I can agree that a new carpet is probably the only answer - that smell lingers for a long time & it's also in the floorboards.
Did the lodger sign any sort of agreement about their responsibility for the house? Did you not ask for a deposit to cover this sort of thing? If the carpet has been down a few years you may be able to get a room size remnant from somewhere. Good luck with finding an answer
