Boundary Fence
6 Answers
Hi, I have recently had to get a fence replaced at the rear of my property. I am respossible for the care and have had a close board feather edge fence erected. My neighbour then came round and complained that it is facing the wrong way (it is facing my garden). Does anyone know of a law which states the way a fence has to face?

The old neighbour was fine with this. A new person moved in 2 years ago and complained - I told him tough - it is my fence - so he put up a new fence behind mine - that way we are both happy
It's traditional that any cross struts, or downward batons face into the garden of the owner of the fence but I don't think it's a legally enforceable requirement. Our back garden fence, owned by our neighbour, is just being replaced and as he is doing the work himself putting up a closely boarded fence, he has asked if we would mind having all the rails our side as this would make it easier for him to erect and avoid him having to come into our garden and trample down all our plants in the process.. We were happy to agree.
Thanks for all the replies. I have also been in touch with CAB and they can offer no legal reason either. It hasn't helped that the right hand side fence (my other neighbour) was already up, but the nice side faced them so i did not question it. Anyway thanks again, i am new to this site, but it is really usefull.
