My flower bed polyanthus leaves are being eaten. Not the flowers, just progressive lumps out of the leaves. I've tried slug pellets but no effect

Hi broadway, slugs and snails are often evident by the slime trails they leave and it appears the pellets dont work, so I'm thinking it could be caterpillars or earwigs that may be the culprits, these feed mostly at night, so it may be necessary to take a torch out into the garden to catch em at it, if this turns out to be the case, you could try spraying the leaves with permethrin at dusk on a warm still evening.
