Currys poor service - what can be done?
Last week I bought a dishwasher from my local branch of Currys. The sales assistant told me that, for an extra 5, the delivery men would connect this new dishwasher and take away my old one. I paid that extra 5. When the delivery was made a few days later (this Monday), the men said they couldn't connect the new one because I hadn't disconnected my old one. When I explained I wasn't aware I was supposed to have disconnected (& wouldn't have known how to), the men said the sales assistant should have told me - but he definitely hadn't. The men refused to disconnect themselves but left me with the new dishwasher, saying I only need call my local Currys to get the old one collected (from my house at a later date) and to get my 5 refunded. I rang my local branch. The manager agreed to refund my 5, apologised for his sales assistant not warning me re the disconnection, but refused to have my old dishwasher collected (saying the men were wrong to promise me that). Now I've had to shell out for disconnection, connection, and collection. (How) Can I make Currys pay?

At the time of sale, I would say the contract was made that you would purchase the dishwasher and pay five pounds for the connection. You should have been given instructions that the old one had to be disconnected, as you could infer that 'connection' of the new one incorporated disconnection of the old one. That contract has not been fulfilled, although by agreeing to having the fiver refunded you may have negated your claim. I would write a letter to the Managing Director (find out his or her name) and explain exactly what happened, don't bother with the local office. They soon jump when they think the MD is thinking their branch has given bad service. Don't demand anything just explain and say you do not feel you have been treated fairly and that you would not want another customer to suffer the same fate. See what happens, it can't hurt and I have had brilliant results by doing this if I have been given the run around.

When we purchased our washing machine, we received a leaflet which said pretty much the same thing.
They also (from memory) have different levels of service - one includes a straight drop off, one included connection and one was taking away the old machine. Did you pay to have the machine taken away? The delivery men may have [mistakenly] thought you did but if you haven't paid for it then you can't reasonably expect to have them do it for you free.

I had an American Fridge Freezer delivered and had very bad customer service which nearly resulted in my husband punching one of the delivery men as he was so rude and nasty. I complained to Currys and got back a letter of apology and was told the man in question would have this incident put on his personnel file. It wasn't the greatest compensation considering the man said 'complain about me if you want, I don't care, I don't get paid enough!'
currys are not a very good company to deal with, i bought a lcd tv costing 1300 and it packed up 3 days later, i rang and got no joy so took it back to the store in original box, receipt, everything only to be told i would have to take it home and wait 3 days for an engineer to come out and assess whether it as faulty or not, the store manager would not budge on this after about an hour of negotiation, even though i caused a scene and shouted, demanding a full refund. i wrote to md and only got a 20 voucher, peanuts in my eyes, i gave the voucher away and vowed never to shop at currys again. best of luck in your quest but i don't think you'll have any luck, currys customer service is a joke. just avoid them in future.
I used to deliver brown and white goods for a well known rival firm and we also had a rule that your old appliance had to be disconnected before we would install the new item. This put us in the situation of having to tell old folk to get someone else to disconnect for them. This of course we couldnt do so we disconnected for anybody who hadnt been told the system. At the time I worked there there was no charge for removal of the old item either. My how things have changed.
It is funny that all people seem to ever do is complain. Just because you have had bad service from one store doesn't mean we are all the same. Besides, the public sees us as money making and sometimes as a 'not bothered' attitide, but some of us aren't, and we get given a bad name by the bad ones.
You should also think of the things that go on behind the scenes behind the company, I am autistic and was given a chance of a career by Currys a chance that I had never had. We also had a christmas outing recently that I attended and never thought I would, best of all is the friends I've made working there, so people ought to think twice before they knock it.
