removing top cistern

I have one one these new fangled toilet cisterns with 2 buttons in a circle i need to repair the ball **** affair but cannot remove the top of the cistern itself,is the button thing screwed in place or wedged in some how ? i am worried about scratching it if i force it .thank you

On mine push one button down and you can see an indent line in the inner surface of the other. Use this with a screwdriver to lift that button up and out and then release the depressed button and lift in the same way. Replace is reversal.
On mine, the button is surrounded by a silver ring.

It's a bit slippy, but the ring unscrews and that gives you access to the cistern.
