We have one of those big paddling pools to put up this year, and want to be able to leave it filled for a few days at a time. What should we put in the water to prevent nasty germs, algae etc?

The kids are one, three and nine.

Ann, I'm not sure about germs and algae, but a small Great White Shark will deter most household pets, including un-neutered Tom Cats whilst the pool remains unattended.

Please remember to take it out before the kids play in it.

Turbulence in the water can make the sharks 'frisky'.

Many organisations insist that paddling pools should always be kept empty unless a supervising adult is in attendance. Why, is very obvious from a safety point of view, particularly with regard to the age of your two youngest .It's also the reason why local councils are leaving paddling pools in parks empty these days.
1 of those chlorine floating things?
Heathfields answers was very helpful I felt. (why do people post this stuff when you ask a question) Sorry now to answer your question. I have a 12ft pool which I leave the water in for almost a week. I have a solar cover which works well, heats and keeps it clean. The best thing I have found to use is something called Pool Magic. I get it off ebay for 2.99. It works really well. Keeps the water really clean and clear. Your still also supposed to use chlorine but I dont as I don't have hundreds of people using the pool. Type in pool magic in ebay and you can get a floating chlorine dispenser from the same seller if you wish.

Thanks for your concern and reminder Heathfield, a tragedy can happen in the blink of an eye. The kids do not have free access to the pool in this case, and it will be covered. (Possibly with the tomcat still inside) Empying it after each use would be utterly unfeasible.

And thank you Toleman and Bradley for answering my question, ROLL ON MORE LUVVERLY SUNSHINE!!

Hi Ann. I also have the same problem with our paddling pool, and would like to have a solution. My main problem is that I am 8mths pregnant, and not coping with the heat of summer. So my 11mth girl (who isnt walking yet), and I go for a daily swim. But it is just too hard for me to empty the large paddling pool everyday. There is no safety issue for us to leave it filled.
Please let me know if you find a solution to getting rid of the algae etc that makes the pool slimey.
Cheers.
Argos sell the chlorine for these pools for about 10 for a large container all you need to know is the approximate volume of water it holds to put in dose required.
I find it works for a good 2/3 weeks before you need to change it & thats usually due to the kids dragging grass in the pool!
