Spuare metres

We are having a new shed put up. The man at the council said the concrete base will be 5 m square. What is this in feet and how long will each side be. Sorry maths is not my strong point.

Each side will be just under 16 and a half feet long. (or to be more exact 16.4041995 ft according to google converter).

The heading and the text of your question are actually in conflict with each other.

If someone says that a shed base will be 'five metres square', that means that the shape will be square and each side will be 5 metres (16' 5") long. (That's quite a big shed)

However, if the area of the (rectangular) base is given as 'five square metres', it means that multiplying the length and width together (when measured in metres) gives '5' as the numerical answer.

For example, the base could be 1m (3' 3") wide and 5m (16' 5") long.

Or it could be 2m (6' 7") wide and 2.5m (8' 2") long.

If it was square, it would have to be 2.24m (7' 4") along each side.

Thanks it is 5 square metres so i think the shed will be 8" x 6" ( looking at different sizes of sheds)
