fires in back gardens?

Hi can anyone please tell me if it is illegal to have garden fires,as the neighbours who live over the back from us keep having these awful fires which carry on for a couple of hours.i dont know what his burning but it stinks horrible,we are dreading the summer months because he still burns then as well.............any advice would be good thanks

Many (relatively) modern housing developments include covenants which prohibit bonfires. That's true of the 1970's estate where I live.

Otherwise, it's unlikely that occasional bonfires would constitute a legal 'nuisance'. See here:

The Smokeless Zone does not apply to bonfires:

Yes, but you should be aware of the precautions you need to take to avoid causing nuisance to your neighbours. Smoke Control Orders only cover smoke from house chimneys.
