While idly speculating, I fell to wondering if, (quite accidentally, of course!), a close spark from an electronic gas lighter might cripple the electronic chip placed on wheelie bins by some local councils.

(I'm aware that some chip manufacturers include static protection circuitry in their microprocessors, but just how effective can it be?)

I think you get fined if you tamper with or remove the chip.
again as idle speculation, what would happen if a magnet passed over it?
Also what if a fox pee'd on it. They are contastanly getting into mine and doing the, I don't mind though they are lovely little things.
