Does anyone know what the voltage is for domestic electrics and what the voltage is for commercial/industrial electrics?

and also, why are they different?

Electricity is fed around this country in a trhree phase system.
This means 3 live wires and 1 neutral.
Between each live and neutral there is 240 volts for domestic use. between each phase, ie, live no 1 and 2, 2 and 3 and 1 and 3 there are 415 volts for industrial use. More power for bigger motors, bit more to it than that , but this is the basics.

Under EU harmonising law the Phase to Neutral voltage has to be within +10% and -6% of 230V. The UK system was designed around 240V but it can vary a little.

240 for domestic
110 for industrial ie building site

110 shock wont kill you and thicker cables so less dangerous in water etc etc
