How can a tv in stand by mode cause a fire,

If there is an electrical fault in the tv. It's not being left on standby that causes the fire, but if the tv is on standby and unattended, then any fire started by the fault could quickly escalate.

It could not happen if the tv was turned off.
and a point worth remembering!! A TV on stand by uses almost as much electricity as when the TV is in use. Just turn it off!!

It's the same for any electrical equipment, Tonyted. Pulling the plug out of the socket is the best answer of all.
