Ants in the composter

I have a black composter (Dalek) I have just discovered ants in it. Is this a good thing or a bad thing. If it is bad, how do I get rid of them.
The area I live is infested with ants, always has been. I do not know what kind of ants they are, but does that make a difference.

A good, sctive compost will attract all sorts of creepy-crawlers. Ants are probably the first to arrive, but expect others. This simply means that the break-down of organic material is proceeding and providing attraction for the bugs... We live in the western U.S. on and near cattle ranches that use cut corn stalks for silage. The silage is buried in a pit about 5 feet deep, covered with black plastic and allowed to "work" for several months... it isn't allowed to turn to compost (although, left to it's completion, it would) but uncovered in winter months and fed to livestock... You'd be amazed at the amount of bugs in the pits. On opening a pit for the first itme, it literally looks like the top is moving! But the cows sure do like ti... must be the protein!
