Hi mitchigan
We have just bought a breadmaker and it turns out lovely bread every time.
We made our own from raw ingredients the first time, but now use "Wright's" bread mix. Wholegrain, granary, white and also flavoured bread mixes, They are lovely.
Lakeland Limited do a dough improver especially for wholemeal bread, just add a small amount to the mix and it will lighten the loaf.
Hello mitchigan

This is a common problem with wholemeal bread so you are probably not doing anything particularly wrong.

Try halving the amount of wholemeal flour and making up the full amount with white breadmaking flour.
Still use the wholemeal settings.

If this works you can try a 25% white flour to 75% wholemeal flour mix.

Good luck.

Let me know if this helps
My breadmaker has the instruction to add a crushed Vitamin C tablet to wholemeal loaves, haven't tried it (not tried wholemela as yet) but got to be worth a try.

I follow my Breadmaker instructions to the letter and I have no probs, but I make sure I buy good flour not cheap stuff. Carrs is good and Canadian Wholemeal Flour is very good. Also try just doing the dough bit in the machine and take out and make rolls .I wish you well
I find that the recipes in my Panasonic breadmaker call for far too much water ! For 500 g of wholemeal flour I only really need 300 ml water whereas the recipe called for 350 ml water
