some sort of insect nest?

Whilst peering in to the loft of my house for the first time today I saw what looked like a white paper spherical decoration hanging under the eaves. On further inspection it looked like an insects nest! I searched on the internet and found a similar photo of a wasp's nest which are apparently golf ball size. This thing is not far off football size! Help! is something sleeping inside or is it an old used nest?. The only insects I get around the house are wood lice (many) but they come up from the cellar surely?
Please let me know if you have any idea what this could be and what to do with it, if anything. I can't reach it from the hatch as the loft is not boarded out.

It sounds by your description that is a wasp's nest. They can be the size of a football. In fact, most of them are that size and this year is bad for them.
I would contact your Environmental Health Dept.
run by the City Council. They will come up and deal with it but they will charge you.

A wasp nest will start off very small and the wasps will keep building it throughout the year, in a loft space they can build right up to November December as it remains dry and warm, by then the nest can reach 4ft across, I have treated many of them as a pest control officer!!

They are usually about the size of a football as stated above, but that is almost certainly what it is.
If it is still active, do not attempt to treat it yourself or you will almost certainly get stung badly!! you cant run away very fast when you are in a roof void!! Trust me!!

Sounds like a wasps' nest to me, too. D'you know how long it's been there cos it could be an old, unoccupied one? If it is occupied & they're not bothering you, just leave it because they'll soon die and they don't stay in the same nest year after year. The young queens will fly away and hibernate for the winter and then build new nests of their own next year. If you have a look at your roof from outside & see any wasps flying in, you'll know where to block it up during the winter, to stop any nesting again next year.

Wasps nest, we had one in our old house and it was big! absolutely amazing to look at though...;)

Haven't seen any wasps coming or going since I moved in 6 months ago. The only reason I looked in through the hach was a thumping noise i'm getting from above every night which stops me sleeping. Suppose wasps don't make plumbing type noises do they? - er which way is the DIY section?

Now that could be a squirrel, or huge rats, or the hot water tank on the blink.....!!
