what makes flies/wasps/other bugs stick to vertical walls, windows etc?

Do they have some kind of goo on their wee feet or some kind of sucker mechanism?!
I know this might sound silly but a wasp landed on my windscreen when I was stopped at traffic lights today and didn't blow/fly off until I was doing over 55 mph!

I was at a car wash..the "powerwash your own" type...& this little bu**er of a wasp started to divebomb me! You know the buzzing around your head thing...so there was I squirting the powerwash gun all over the place (doing the waving hand around to shoo it away..not kill it)....except at my car.Dunno if the petrol station had it on CCTV but I know the guy in the car behind reversed away very quickly!! I know what you mean though..I've had little flies on my side window clinging on for dear life as I'm driving along - extreme sport insects you think?
