Help! I used a too hot iron on my new polythene trousers and now have a shiny iron shaped mark. What can I use to remove it? Any helpful advice would be gratefully received.

Do you mean polyester? If so then i'm afraid there is nothing you can do about it.

I think the early onset of senility must explain my stupid mistake. Of course I meant polythene. I hope you are wrong, Daffy, but I will keep looking, just in case someone comes up with something you didn't know about. Thank you for answering, anyway.
Think you will have to bin them and buy a new pair ,as you have melted them .
I googled 'iron marks polyester' and got this, don't know if it works, it will make a difference if it is marked or melted. If it's melted it will need binning.

If the fabric is just shiny but not get a tea towel or other clean piece of fabric and make it just slightly damp with white vinigar. Put that on top of the shiny mark on your jacket and with an iron set at a moderate heat iron the jacket through the damp towel. That should take the shine out of your jacket.
Put iron marks all over them, then tell everyone that they are shiny trousers, thats how you bought them.
