due to poor landscaping when my house was built the front lawn is growing on clay and is constantly soaking wet

can anyone suggest ways of drying it out to save me digging the whole lot up and starting again

I can sympathise! Although this suggestion will probably not cure it should help. Tine the lawn, if you can get hold of a tiner which will remove plugs of turf this will be better, but if not use a garden fork and wriggle it around to create holes, about 6" apart. Brush sharp sand into the holes, gradually the drainage will improve. Good luck.

I have the same problem which left my patio covered in a sea of brown mud,I spoke to an old builder to ask what I could do as a previous suggestion had been to dig a meter deep trench which I did not fancy,he says you used to be able to get lawn drain tiles,these are placed approx 6 inches deep under the grass and drain the lawn off to some suitable point,I havent found out where to get them or the cost but if I do I will let you know

I am sure you have looked at the obvious eg that the lawn/garden is low. We have attended to a few gardens locally that have the same problem and all turned out to be lower than the adjoining gardens, meaning that they were not only having to drain their own water, but that of their neighbours as well!! Cheapest solution here is to build the garden up with soil.
Before spending any money on drainage, it is imperative to find out if a soakaway will work in your soil type.
