Last night I lit three candles and read a book. They all burned down and made a muckle great wax puddle on my hairy... carpet. What do I do?! Chip it off? Hold a lighter over it to melt it, then scrub like hell? It's not even my carpet to obliterate, I'm only renting. The room, not the carpet.

I'm no expert but I seem to remember you should use an iron (on a coolish setting I guess) and some absorbent material like paper. I think brown paper would be best but you don't see it often these days. Perhaps tissue or even newspaper would do. Then iron the carpet through the material or paper and the wax will melt and be absorbed by the material. I can't vouch for this, but it does sound better than a lighter! Good luck, and do let us know what happens.
The ironing method is a little more complicated - use paper towels on what's left of the wax, put a cloth over that & iron wih no steam. Change paper towels and repeat as often as it takes, then gently clean ithe area. (Better not clean too much, I suspect the carpet is grubby and you'll end up with one clean patch!).
