objection to planning permission

I live in a small village which is classed as a 'conservation area'. We recently objected strongly to a proposed extension to our next door but one neighbours property - as it was going to cut out light from our garden, and we felt was too big for the size of property (not in keeping with the rest of the houses in our terrace). The owner came to see us once he read our objection. He obviously did not realise how much it was going to impact on our property, and said that he would change the plans. However, we just received word from the planning department that permission has been granted based on the initial plans!! All the neighbours have objected - and they have not come to see how it will affect any of us. They have simply looked at the front of the building, when the extension is at the back!! What can we do now?? Should we contact an ombudsman???

Contact your local councillor immediately. It is what they are there for. Better still, get all your neighbours to contact them independently. Weight of numbers counts! You will be able to get their number from your Town Hall/County Council (whichever is appropriate). Also, try phoning the planning department and ask to speak to the officer dealing with the proposal (should be on the letter you had) and ask them to explain the decision in view of the objections. Your neighbour doesn't have to accept the planning permission. Ask him if he will build it to the revised (agreed?) layout.

The only thing that you can do is to check carefully whether the planning permission granted conforms to the Planning Guidelines for your area. If it does, there is nothing more that you can do. If it does not, then you must write to The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister clearly stating the divergencies and asking for it to be called in for re-consideration.

Planning is never rejected because of neighbours. The planning department will only look into your objections. But if they think that there is no problem with the plans, even if it is a 'conservation area'. Oh and once passed they wont reverse. Shame really because I agree they never look into what they are inspecting. Good luck and try not to let this get you down. I had the same problem with a guy down my close and he didnt like what I was doing and started to get very nasty towards me. But after letting him try and push me around for five minutes he got what he had coming. And I was only putting a new window in where a garage door was and had to get planning.
