6 months ago I had a potterton boiler installed by a local heating engineer. I now have some problems-a flame failure due to low water pressure plus 1 or two other minor(I hope) problems. After repeated attempts I am unable to contact the installer who would have done any repairs for free as boiler is still under warenty.I then phoned Heateam whom I registered the boiler with-hoping to have the repair done by them . because I coould not access the serial number they want to charge me 200 up front with any re-imbursement up to the descretion of the repairman. Is this normal practice? it seems excessive and is way more than I can afford as it seems like a gamble. Any ideas??

As you know, Heateam is run by Potterton. If the boiler is still under warranty then I'm pretty sure they'd have to carry out the repair free of charge and you'd get your 200 refunded. I think it's probably only because you can't give them the serial number that there's a problem, the service engineer should have no problem finding it. I found Heateam very good.

Thanks for the reassuring words,Twenty20....I shall think more seriously about Heateam
If it is just low water pressure you will get charged for them to top it up as this is not part of their breakdown service and not a boiler fault or classed as a breakdown. You just need to top it up using the filling loop to approx 1.2 bar you'reself. The installer should have explained how to do this when they showed you how to use the boiler and controls etc.
heateam actually offer a very good price and service in that they are experts on their own products and the price quoted includes all spare parts and labour, when you think that a new fan could cost 250 fitted, a new circuit board 250 then this is very good value.
when you say the flame failed due to low water pressure are you actually referring to the pressure of the mains cold water entering the boiler when you are trying to run hot water or the water pressure within the boiler for the heating (as shown by the pressure guage on the boiler)
if your mains water pressure is too low to operate the boiler then you could be in trouble as heatteam are only going to repair the appliance under warranty if it has been installed correctly I.e. correct pipe sizing, water pressure, gas pressures etc. And can i tell you that i was chatting with a baxi engineer recently and 80% of all warranty call outs are due to the appliance being fitted incorrectly so they then have to charge the poor householder for any work undertaken.

Hello Boilerman-I have only just found your comment. It was low water pressure, and I am quite certain that my installer did not explain what to do. HEATEAM did show me what to do,and they did not charge me-the engineer did say that I could expect to need to adjust the water pressure once or twice a year ...so all is sorted! (I hope!) Thankyou everyone for all the advice.
pastafreak, I have a potterton boiler, and its given me loads of trouble
