we are currently in the process of buying a detached house linked to next door by the 2 garages meeting. Would anyone know if we could get planning permission to put a bedroom above the garage or would it affect next door..??? thanks in advance. ian

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I would put a downstairs bedroom actually in the garage. It may require you glue a garage door on to the filled wall when it is finished however.
It will be considerably cheaper, more practical and would alos be considered a family room, study or fourth bedroom when you sell up.
Personally, I do not believe you will gat PP for above it. Because if next door wanted to do the same, you will then have a semi.

Some problems here. The foundations of the garage will not support an upper floor.
The width of the garage is only about 8' wide and only 1 skin so your room will be less than this.
As you are using a party wall you will need to get permission from your neighbour. It will devalue both your houses as you are making it a semi rather than link detached. Your windows would probably overlook your neighbours garden and he can raise strong objections to this.
