When should I prune my hedge and my young rowan tree? They have both been in since last summer.

Your rowan shouldn't need pruning for years yet except to remove any dead branches. It depends what kind of hedge you have but a light pruning a couple of times a year (spring & late summer/early autumn) will encourage bushy growth.
http://www.bestgardening.com/bgc/howto/carehedges02.htm#trim Your rowan needs pruning to establish a strong structure. Dead wood can be removed at any time. In late winter (February) prune off any limbs that cross another and will rub.
