Richmond's a nice town, and there are some wonderful places in the Dales. Where you end up living'll probably be dictated by how much you want to spend on another house, but north Yorkshire is a nice part of the country to live in.
My sister lives in Wetherby West Yorkshire which is a lovely town with plenty of services. Originally a market town with a town hall and market area. A mixture of old stone houses and more modern developments. Handy for the motorway and places like Harrogate. Its between Leeds and York so you get the best of both worlds. Some lovely pubs as Wetherby was once on a main coach road the old A1.
Pocklington is a really nice area. Check out houses for sale on rightmove.co.uk

a good way to find out about an area is to go to a land registry company because they usually provide packages that include lots of relevant information about a place. one is http://www.landsearch.net/services.asp - the NP1 service includes info on crime, house prices, school catchments areas etc!
