is it safe to paint a cot?

I've been offered a second hand cot, but it's looking a bit rough so I'd like to paint it. Is it safe to do this and if it is, what type of paint should I use - gloss obviously but are some brands safer for this kind of thing than others?

You can paint it, you need to get special nursery paint which is lead free - you need the special paint in case the baby chews the bars!
