changing colour of gold taps

Is there any way of replating gold taps to give a chrome finish without removing them? A plumber has advised that the bath taps are impossible to remove without demolishing half of the bathroom.

Can you take the bath panel off? If you can then the taps can be changed easily. If you can't have you tried cleaning the taps with metal polish this may work?

I'd check with another plumber because even if the taps are ancient and pretty stuck on they can usually be 'drilled out' by a decent plumber and then can be replaced with new. I shouldn't think there's anything you can do to change the colour of the taps.
