4 months ago me and my partner split up. we bought a house in 2004 and had a child in 2006 we had a nasty split in 2007 and i left him in the house with everything and took our child, i was homeless, living with friends up untill jan 08 when i begun to private rent i work part time but im struggling lots financially because my partner hasn't yet or seems to be in a hurry to get my name off the mortgage i cant get as much help off the council as i need for me and my child, is there anyway that i can get my name off the mortgage quickly? i only have around 20 weeks left renting the property of which the council will contributribute (a very small amount) to the rent. my ex is keeping the house and trying to remortgage in his name only but its takin so long as the house is no longer the value he needs it to be and even if he sells it, it could take months. i also wondered if i would be financially better off not working for a while?

You can't just pack your job in and go onto benefits, as you'd be required to actively seek further employment. If you were able to get Jobseekers Allowance, it's not a lot, but taking into account the fact that you'd receive housing and Council Tax benefits, plus your child allowance with a single parent supplement, it could work out in your favour. However, once your house is sold, depending on the amount you gained from the sale, this could reduce or even stop any unemployment benefits you may be able to claim (such as Income Support).
thank you for your answer. if he does sell the house i will gain nothing. there is no equity in the property, at the min i am earning just under 100 pound a week plus my tax credits of 80 the council are givin me 20 punds a week so my monthly income is 800 500 of which is rent 100 council tax so have 50 a week to live on. ideally i dont want to stop workin as i have never been without a job since i started work, it just seems in my situation that the people living on benefits get more help than myself because i work?! it doesn't seem fair! do you know if there is a way i can get my name off the mortgage? if my name was off that i could get a council house or more help off the council but i just dont have the money to pay land registration fees and all the other fees
