when is the best time of the year to go out and cut wood, for walking sticks,in the uk.

my dad cuts a lot of wood when he sees it spare because he's a woodturner, but i think any time of year is ok as long as u let it dry out

That is true, but if you cut in the late autumn / winter before the sap rises in the spring the wood will be drier and you won't disturb nesting wildlife or fruit/nuts etc. that are growing. You can also see the suitable branches at this time of year because the leaves have dropped.

The countrymans answer is "when you see it" in case someone else gets there first.

I found cutting in spring summer the bark tends to shrink on drying. Some tree species take a long time to dry.
