Can anyone recommend - or even suggest - a telephone landline provider that doesn't depend on keeping a BT line?

It is always worth doing so because the meter readers do make mistakes. I had an electricity bill for a two-bedroomed flat recently (cooking/central heating by gas) for over 800 for a quarter. It turned out that it was for a flat in a different block on the same site so do check the meter number which shows on your bill to see if it is actually yours they've read.
