Cost of carpeting a small room?

Hey people,

Quick question, roughly how much does it cost to carpet a small room, nothing special just a decent carpet without holes in! Room being maybe 12x 8 foot? Not looking for exact answer just what kind of region it would be in once it had been fitted aswell, like �100ish, �150ish, �200 �300 more?

It depends on the quality of carpet you want. If you go to a big chain like Carpetright, you can buy off the roll from about �4.99 per square metre 12 x 8 feet is aprox (rounded up) 4 x 3 metres. So the carpet itself could cost about �60, but then you may need underlay, (modern carpet now has a non foam backing which can be stuck directly to floor) which would be another �60. Add on grippers, door bars and fitting for �70. I think you could be looking at �130 to �150.

Another thing to account for is the carpet fitters will also charge �25 to move any furniture out of the way and lift old carpet, although they wont generally dispose of it.

Well it's not difficult to see that you need around 12 square metres of carpet. The problem is with trying to give a guide price for 1 square metre of carpet. I've just taken a quick look at the Allied Carpets website. Their prices range from �1.99 to �84.99 per square metre. So that makes 12 sq,m. cost anywhere between �24 and �1020. That's quite a range!

In practice, though, if you hunt around some of the smaller shops (or market stalls) that specialise in selling roll ends, you shouldn't need to pay much more than �100 for a perfectly acceptable carpet. (You might well get something for quite a bit less).

Remember that the cheaper carpets are generally only intended for light wear (e.g. in a bedroom). If you want something that will last a long while in a room where dozens of people will be constantly walking across it in their outdoor shoes, you might need to pay a bit more.

If you're really on a tight budget, check out the local auction rooms where they have house clearance sales. You might pick up something perfectly acceptable for �10 to �20.

I recently recarpeted a room about the same size (it was a spare bedroom so I got a bedroom quality carpet). I paid �8pm for the carpet, which for you would work out at almost �100, then as others say you may need to add on underlay etc (I didn't as mine was fine from the previous carpet).

I also paid �25 to the fitter just for fitting, I had already cleared the room and lifted the old carpet.

However with a room this size you may be able to get a remnant or cut-off in some shops, which would work out a lot cheaper

Agree with Buenchico about auction rooms. Often they're practically giving them away. The only problem can be examining the whole carpet before deciding whether or not to bid on it.

If you have a John Lewis near you, their carpet department has a board with remnant samples on it. You might strike lucky and get the size/colour that you want for a fraction of its retail value. They charge �125 for fitting. Good luck.
