Gas Fire keeps going out

My gas fire keeps going out. I have to light it with a match, it stays alight for a little while, then goes out. I think the igniter and the fire going out are two different problems, but I can live with using matches, I just want it to stay alight! My friend says he thinks it could be the probe, any other ideas?

Could simply be backdraft down the flue blowing out the flame due to the high wind conditions outside.
You're friend may be correct the thermocouple (probe ?) may be on its way out or the pilot light may need adjusting to play correctly over the "probe". Either way a simple service will sort it out and while the gasman is there he can test the thermocouple and replace it if it is required. He also will check the ignition, more often than not it is another simple adjustment of the electrode or just a loose connection.
most likely the pilot head is partially blocked so the pilot flame is not as strong as it should be and with the slightest draught the flame is lifting off the thermocouple and the gas valve is shuttng off.
as gasman said a good service will sort it.
