Is there any way to keep stinging nettles at bay, other than to keep pulling them when they appear? (without poisoning surrounding animals)

Have a look at the following link. I always reckon diggin up the roots is the best way.

stinging nettles take time to develop their sting so if you spot them whilst they are still young you should be abnle to pull them out, root and all, without getting stung yourself. Thats the only was to supress them without using chemicals.
Butterflies use nettles to lay their eggs, and if you put the nettles in a sack and let them soak in a bucket of water the liquid makes excellent plant food.
cover with old carpet to keep out light. Dig out roots when soil is soft.
