We have a cat keeps visiting our garden to do his business and never covers it up. Hes a friendly cat but Ive everything to discourage it from using our garden even one of those sonic gun things but he doesnt take any notice. I cant really put horrible stuff down as we have a cat of our own but at least he always goes in the same place and covers it up whereas the other does it all over, even the lawn and just leaves it. How can we get rid of this cat !!!

if he's friendly and you can grab hold of him by the scruff of his neck, hold him under the outside tap, if you have one, for about 30 seconds. he may squeal and screech, but you're not actually harming him, he just won't like it. if you can do this to him a couple of times it will deter him from coming into your garden, although may not stop him altogether. we have a ginger cat who comes into our garden and we 've done this to him a couple of times. he now runs a mile if he sees us, but does still actually pay us a visit now and again.. we read this tip on the rspca site, although they recommend using a hose pipe on it if you can't get hold of it, so we feel if it's good enough for the rspca it's good enough for us, and isn't actually being cruel.

I tried the water pistol thing and as they took no notice and they had bolted before the sream of water hit them I graduated to the hose with exactly the same results. Now when they see me they run, but by then its too late. Wish I had used my sense and got to know them first and then I could have done the outside tap idea. No chance of catching them now. I have tried the "hello nice little pussy" talk but no good at all.Problem is my neighbour has four of them. All left to roam as they are always out. Why do people get these animals when they have no intention of looking after them? I dont know what's worse his dead foxes in the front garden or cat poo everywhere.

Forgot to say that I have tried everything else including the cat scarer thingy, but have heard that "Lion dung" REALLY WORKS. I saw some on ebay, but is is expensive about �40 a bag. How much are we to spend on getting rid of the things. I had nothing against cats until I became a gardener.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. I can never get to the outside tap in time so I have thrown the odd washing up bowl of water over them but never drenched them enough obviously. One of these big water pistols which look like machine guns might be a good idea. I`ll give anything a go.

just reading about the lion dung trick has made me remember that human male urine - stronger than ladies apparently - liberally sprinkled around the perimeter of your garden is alleged to do the same. not tried it though so can't vouch for it.

I can't stand these bloody animals - they are the closest thing to vermin there is without actually being vermin.

In my last house we had a neighbours cat who regularly used to crap on my lawn and once I saw my daughter (who was 2 at the time) pick up a freshly laid turd, until I screamed at her.

If I was quick enough I'd've kicked the damn thing as hard as I could - and I can still kick a rugby ball through the uprights from halfway.

Horrible creatures.

The other thing that never ceases to amaze me is that people have cat litter trays in their houses, and I've seen them in kitchens. Why the hell would anybody want their cat crapping in their house?

Tigersam I have a dog and the silly mutt is about as effective as a snail.
We got one of those things that makes a high pitch sound that is supposed to chase them away but it just freaked the dog out. So we took that back. Most spray stuff is designed to keep both dogs and cats off so no joy there. We will now have to wait up all night to catch the begger and give it a bath in a bucket and hope that cures it but we have two to deal with.

Since Shaney went of to the big kennel I also have this problem .One look from him was enought to deter them .
i would never go as far as to hurt them but have to admit their poop is absolutely foul especially when you unwittingly tread in it whilst gardening and then unwittingly tramp it through the house !
At least with a dog you can get an angle on it and clear it away .
Or you uncover a load whilst digging around ..Yuk .
I have tried everything ,those crystals ,orange peel ,moth balls ..all sorts to no avail.
One of the reasons I would never have a cat ..because I would not like it to foul other peoples property .I would be terrified it would be killed on the roads and I would also be terrified of people like flip flop ....

Well said flip-flop. I detest these evil little creatures. In the past I have kept a jug of cooled water with sugar dissolved in it by the back door. If I catch any in my garden, I throw it over them, as I was told that it makes their fur a bit sticky and they can't stand it. Simple answer to the cats:- stay out of my garden and I'll leave you alone!

If cat owners were responsible for their pets, not letting them use other peoples gardens as a toilet, we wouldn't feel the need to do these things. Throwing water over a cat does not harm it, as ethandron states, the rspca recommend it for problem cats. What would you prefer, a little water ar a shotgun?!?!?!?

All the cats I have had have been indoor cats. I hate having cat c*ap on my grass it's nasty and I wouldn't want my cats to be that kind of a pain. I have run out of ideas except the one I haven't tried which is a good dousing.
Its catching the begger thats the problem.
I have another problem which makes it worse. My next door naighbours garden is a total tip. The grass is so long and I know cats love that so the garden has became full they have come to mine and the garden on the other side so I don't know how well this will work.
