How to fit an outside security light?

I have never done anything like this before.

There is no difference fitting an external light and fitting a new light inside the house, in terms of wiring - you need to find a way of breaking into the existing downstairs lighting circuit at a ceiling rose.
This site also advises you about 'Part P' - the Building Control regulations that impact electrical wiring. Or some bright spark on AB is bound to say that you cannot do this type of electrical work without being a qualified electrician. For the scope of work you are proposing you can do it, but you do need to be competent and sure of what you are doing.

My exterior security light is just fitted by the flex tacked down the wall and leading through the kitchen wall with a plug on the end , plugged into a socket next to my washing machine . It is all weather proof of-course . x

A perfectly good and simpler alternative way of wiring, Bigmamma. Should have a 3A fuse in the 13A plug.

the answer lies in the type of light. is it a full time one (dawn to dusk) or a security light switched on by a PIR whereby walking into an area turns it on.
if its the former then connect it to your existing lighting circuit up or down, though up is preferable cos its likely to have less load on it
if its a PIR job connect to your ring main and NOT your lighting circuit as the load is too great, by using a fused spur, which allows local control especially if its a switched fused spur. i have connected mine to the upstairs ring main and just drilled out through the wall (s)from the spur.
the higher position seems to suit the purpose of the light as well

It is very easy. Drill your outside wall. Feed the electric cable through the wall. Now root the cable towards your connection point. Now you can connect the light. I hope this will helpful for you.
