how to modernise a tile fire suround

Have a1960'S tile fire suround which houses a very efficient gas fire, is there anyway I could make the suround look a bit more modern.Don't want to remove it , cos I like it.

I *refurbished* my 1960's tiled hearth by simply regrouting all the tiles (in a pinky colour to match the tiles) and adding a chunky wood surround which I stained a mahogany colour and varnished. The simple regrouting made a big difference on its own.

In addition to wat Juggerling has said, you can also get tile paint if you're not too keen on the tiles that are there already.
