Leylandii

We have two leylandii at the bottom of our garden.There are quite a few different birds that nest every year.The neighbours garden at the bottom of our garden wants us to cut them down .We have lived in the house since 1987 and the trees were about a few feet high then.They Build a patio and erected a summer house near them and now they are coming with all this rubbish.Their house is about 40ft away from the trees.I must admit that the trees are too high and I would lob them if we have too but they are not shading anyone .What advice would you give us ,please.
