Shrubs suitable for heavy clay soil
3 Answers
Can anyone tell me which shrubs I can plant that will survive in heavy clay. I would prefer, quick growing evergreens, up tp 3 ft tall. If poss with berries that the wild birds can feed on. The only surviving things I have at present are silver birch and mountain ash trees. Even buddlia dies as soon as it hits the clay! (approx 9 inches)
Thankyou in advance.

Grows at a medium rate and achieves a final size of about 10 feet in height and perhaps 5 feet wide. There are several varieties with differences in leaf structure and color. It does grow berries, but only if planted with another Japonica nearby. Although it prefers well drained average soil it will tolerate clay. I'd plant it in an oversized hole with lots of peat moss surrounding it. Ours does well and it's a lovely shrub with flowers in the spring...
Have alook at this site, should help you decide, but the best advice I can give is to look around the neighbourhood and see what shrubs do really well in the area you live, good luck, Ray
