ivy & creosote

Please can anyone tell me if it is true that if you spray/daub/paint the cut ends of ivy with creosote it stops it from growing any further.
My beautiful but extremely annoying ivy is growing into my garage (then proceeds to shed a awful sticky substance)and although I cut it back it obviously grows back time and time again. I have been told that by spraying the ends with the creosote it will 'stun' its growth.
Any chance of this working (or anything working) or am I wasting my time, please help!

I'm not sure whether this works or not, but just want to mention that you cannot legally buy creosote in the uk anymore as it is banned, there are creosote substitutes available, but if this method did work, the substitute might not have the active ingredient that would also work (if you see what I mean)

The `awful sticky substance` is probably caused by Greenfly and fed on by ants whom milk them for it. Before creosote became illegal to use I used to make a 50/50 mix with old engine oil and paint it on underground newly cut roots of ivy and cover with a black plastic bag and soil which I found did the job and got rid of unwanted ivy etc, etc.
