Have you heard about a grat idea called - Freecycle
Its a worldwide Yahoo group set up country by country then area by area
Its a site where people give away (completly free) items that still have a use but people do not want them nor do they need to go into landfill
You have to sign up for the area that you need and its amazing what is on there
You can post wanted and offered items on there!
You email the person offering saying you would like this item and when you can collect then if they reply to you off you go
This is a great site and its amazing what you can get and what you can get rid of!!
The best way to find it is to put your city name and freecycle into a google search i.e Manchester Freecycle - this will then find the manchester freecycle network
Hope this helps and it means less in landfill

I've gotten rid of all sorts of stuff that was too good to chuck out but not really of saleable quality (well, some I could have sold but I couldn't really be bothered asking for just a few quid and haggling). It felt good knowing that the stuff was still going to be used as well and, as you say, not go into landfill.
